This is a picture of what I wish had happened last night. Instead, Scout met a skunk face to face, and she has the smell to prove it.
Brian Black and I were sitting out on the porch, enjoying the night as I sometimes do with friends on the porch, and Scout was being Scout: peeing a little, sniffing around, or laying beside us half asleep. Suddenly, she sprang up and ran to our left into the darkness and was barking like crazy.
We’d had a possum come around the house before, so I figured it was just that, and that she’s frighten it off with her barking. This is not what happened. Instead, I heard what sounded like a hissing sound, then Scout ran over towards us, still barking. I hopped up to grab my flashlight from inside, and when I opened the door, two things happened simultaneously:
1. I smelled the skunk spray, and
2. Scout ran in the house.
By the time I got her out of the house and in the garage, the old house smell we’ve tried to get rid of was replaced with something far worse. Brian generously helped me bathe her with wild concoctions we derived from his space phone, and eventually I got to cleaning the house.
Today, I’m taking her to some de-skunking pros, and hopefully soon our house will smell old again.
